2018 GMC Terrain vs. 2018 Nissan Rogue
SUVs have become an increasingly popular type of vehicle. This makes a lot of sense because you can get a lot in one neat package. These vehicles have more space for cargo and passengers than a car, and they can also do a bit of towing and hauling.
Today, we are going to take a closer look at the compact SUV category and a couple of the vehicles that make it up. The 2018 GMC Terrain and the 2018 Nissan Rogue are two vehicles that fit in this category. Below, we are going to do a head-to-head comparison of these vehicles and their features to see which one comes out on top.
Performance and Fuel Economy
The first comparison we are going to do will be performance and fuel economy. Let’s take a look at the engine options and the miles per gallon on these vehicles.
The base engine for the 2018 GMC Terrain is the 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. This engine gives you 170-horsepower. However, there are a couple more options for the 2018 Terrain. A second engine option is the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 252-horsepower. Finally, a 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine is available that gives you 137-horsepower. Between these three engine options, you have some serious performance ability. For example, the GMC Terrain can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
As far as fuel economy goes, the Terrain gives you 26 city miles per gallon and 30 highway miles per gallon. The 2.0-liter engine gives you 22 city miles per gallon and 28 highway miles per gallon. The turbodiesel engine is your best option for fuel efficiency with 28 city and 39 highway miles per gallon.
The 2018 Nissan Rogue is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that gives you 170-horsepower. However, that is your only engine option unless you are going with the Rogue Hybrid. That engine does gives you pretty decent fuel economy with 26 city miles per gallon and 33 highway miles per gallon.
When looking at the numbers on both of these vehicles there are a couple things that stand out. The big one is the Rogue only gives you one engine option. It has the same horsepower as the base engine option in the Rogue, but it can’t get you anywhere near the 252-horsepower of the 2.0-liter Terrain engine. The Rogue does have pretty good fuel economy for an SUV though, but the turbodiesel engine beats out the Rogue in fuel economy with 2 more city and 6 more highway miles per gallon. Overall, it looks like the Terrain wins out in both performance and fuel economy.
Interior Features and Tech
Let’s take a look at the inside. Both of these vehicles seat five people, but the Rogue does have an optional third row that can make it seat up to seven people. Both of these vehicles offer ample space to make the ride comfortable for children as well as adults.
These vehicles also both offer you some standard technology, but what they offer is a bit different. The Terrain gives you the IntelliLink infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, voice recognition and a rearview camera standard. Also standard is a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Nissan Rogue gives you a base infotainment center with a 5-inch display standard. You also get Bluetooth, a rearview camera, a USB port and smartphone integration standard.
As you can see, there are a lot of similar features on the inside, but the Terrain has a bigger touchscreen and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot that the Rogue doesn’t have.
Pricing and Trim Options
Next, it is on to the pricing and trim options for each of these vehicles. The 2018 GMC Terrain starts off at a price of $24,995 for the base SL trim. This is a very basic model with not a lot of extra features.
The SLE is the next step up and it starts at $27,820. This trim level has a couple package options that can add great comfort and infotainment features. With the SLE you can also upgrade to the larger engine or the turbodiesel engine. The Terrain SLT is the next trim level. This vehicle starts off at a price of $31,320 and it comes with a larger (8-inch) infotainment touchscreen and leather upholstery. This trim level also has a couple package options so you can add safety and infotainment features. The SLT also has the diesel engine option as well, but that will cost a little more.
The final trim option for the Terrain is the Denali. The Denali is the luxury trim option and it starts off at a price of $37,520. This trim gives you the 252-horsepower engine standard and it gives you an upgraded infotainment system standard. The Denali also gives you rear parking sensors and rear cross traffic alert standard. This is the trim you want if you are looking for the best.
The 2018 Nissan Rogue gives you three trim level options. The base level trim for the 2018 Nissan Rogue is the S. The S trim starts off at a price of $25,655. This trim level gives you a basic infotainment system with a small display as well as Bluetooth capabilities, but there is not a lot of features that stand out here.
The SV trim level is the middle trim option, and it will cost you $25,900. This trim also gives you an optional third row of seating if you are looking for something slightly bigger. The SV trim also gives you some added safety features like blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.
The 2018 Rogue SL hits a price of $33,385 and it is the top-level trim option. The SL includes features like a 360-degree camera, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel and more.
When comparing the prices of both of these vehicles, you will see that the base model of the Terrain is cheaper than that of the Rogue, but the top trim option is more expensive on the Terrain than the Rogue. However, it is important to keep in mind all you are getting with each trim option. With the Terrain Denali, you are getting an engine that is bigger and better than that of the Rogue, plus lots of technology and luxury features.
Which is Right for You?
Both of these vehicles are pretty good options in the compact SUV segment. However, when you take a closer look at these options it is clear that the Terrain offers you more power and performance, slightly better technology and a more affordable starting price. You have to choose which vehicle is right for you, but the Terrain seems to stand out in this comparison.
